Reasons for Ecodesign

Transformer losses represent around 2.5% of EU energy consumption.

Using more energy efficient transformers should lead to energy savings of an estimated 16,2 TWh per year which is half of Denmark’s total annual electricity consumption (32 TWh).

These energy savings represent reduction of 3,7 Mt emissions of CO2  per year.

This is the reason of the implementation of the program: 20 - 20 - 20

  • 20% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • 20% higher energy efficiency
  • 20% of total energy generated from renewables

The rules for EcoDesign entered into market as COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 548/2014 in 21.5.2014 implementing Directive 2009/125 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to small, medium and large power transformers.

1.10.2019, a new COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2019/1783 was issued amending the first Regulation (EU) no. 548/2014 implementing Directive 2009/125 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council.

Main outcomes of initiative

  • Reduction of load losses and no-load losses for transformers up to 3 150 kVA and Um ≤ 36 kV
  • Increased efficiency of the transformers
  • Reduction of total operating costs

In average electricity passes through up to 5 transformers as it travels from the power plant to the end customer

These saving are nearly equivalent to current consumption of the Czech republic.
